Custom Orthotics: A Simple Solution to Multiple Foot Problems
If you have pain from bunions, hammertoes, or other foot conditions, custom orthotics can ease discomfort and improve your mobility. Discover what custom orthotics are, the conditions they can treat, and how to know if you’re a candidate.

Foot pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems, affecting up to 87% of people at some time during their lives. Though most cases of foot pain improve with activity changes and supportive shoes, severe or localized pain may require more targeted care. Custom orthotics can provide relief and improve comfort.

At Prime Foot and Ankle Care, experienced podiatrist Nrupa Shah, DPM, offers custom orthotics to patients in South Brunswick, North Brunswick, Kendall Park, Franklin Park, Princeton, and Plainsboro, New Jersey.

Keep reading to learn what custom orthotics are, common foot problems they can help treat, and how to determine whether they’re right for you.

What are custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are prescription shoe inserts designed specifically for your feet. They look similar to insoles that you buy at the grocery store or pharmacy, but are made to support your unique foot structure and walking pattern. This customization ensures a precise fit and helps ease discomfort caused by foot problems.

Common foot problems that orthotics can address

Dr. Shah prescribes custom orthotics to treat various foot problems, including:

Custom orthotics can serve multiple purposes. For heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis, they support the arch and absorb impact from walking or running. For conditions such as corns and calluses or bunions, orthotics provide cushioning and reduce friction, lowering the risk of sores and blisters.

What to expect during an orthotics visit

Before recommending custom orthotics, Dr. Shah reviews your health records, asks about your symptoms, and completes a foot exam. Tell her if your foot pain is worse at certain times or during specific activities, such as exercise. Dr. Shah may also conduct X-rays or other imaging to check for problems, such as fractures or arthritis.

If we determine you’re a good candidate for orthotics, we take three-dimensional (3D) scans of your feet and complete a gait analysis, which assesses your walking pattern. Then, we send your scans to an orthotics lab that creates your prescription inserts.

A week or two later, when your orthotics are ready, you return to our office to try them on. Dr. Shah inserts them into your shoes and checks how they fit. Most people notice reduced foot pain within a few days of wearing orthotics, but it may take longer depending on the severity or cause of your pain.

Benefits of custom orthotics

Aside from relieving foot pain, custom orthotics offer various benefits, including:

  • Improved foot alignment, reducing strain throughout the body
  • Greater comfort during daily activities such as work and exercise
  • Better shock absorption to reduce the risk of future injuries

Custom orthotics are usually more durable than their over-the-counter (OTC) counterparts. Most people can wear them for two or three years and sometimes longer because they’re made of durable, high-quality materials.
